Overview

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is seeking a Web Developer with a specialization in Drupal 8 to join its website engineering team. The team develops and operates CFR's four main websites: www.cfr.org, www.foreignaffairs.com, and its two education-oriented sites, modeldiplomacy.cfr.org and world101.cfr.org. The successful candidate will report to the Deputy Director of Digital Development and will serve as the lead developer for the two education sites, both recently launched and undergoing intensive development as the linchpins of CFR's growing education mission. CFR is open to arrangements for working remotely, although candidates in or around New York City are preferred.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Create and enhance custom Drupal modules by employing Drupal 8’s core APIs and by following the best practices established by the Drupal community.
  • Work within an agile methodology and with tools such as GitHub, Jira, HipChat, and Vagrant/Docker to interpret user stories and convert them to discrete technical tasks.
  • Provide management direction to a team of Drupal developers, such as assigning tickets for development, conducting code reviews, and leading software-estimation efforts.
  • Architect the website’s software stack so as to enhance site reliability and optimize performance.
  • Debug issues and troubleshoot problems across the layers of the website stack.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrable proficiency with back-end skills such as HTTP, PHP 5 and 7, the AWS ecosystem (EC2, S3, RDS, etc.), memcached, varnish, OAuth, and techniques like asset loading and caching for optimizing website performance.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in front-end technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/ECMAScript, jQuery, and AngularJS; in debugging JavaScript calls with tools such as Charles Proxy; implementing Adobe Analytics (Omniture) and similar applications; and solving problems with cross-browser compatibility on both desktop and handheld devices.
  • At least three years’ experience in developing, maintaining, and administering Drupal sites and modules, with specific expertise in Drupal's core APIs, the Drupal theming layer, Symfony2, and Twig.
