Overview

CFR's volunteer internships give selected volunteer interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning.

 

The Washington External Affairs team is comprised of the Congress and U.S. Foreign Policy program and CFR's diplomatic and executive branch initiatives. The Congress program engages members of Congress and their staffs on both sides of the aisle with a weekly roundtable policy discussion series, monthly briefings for Senate chiefs of staff, breakfast meetings for members of Congress, and other on-demand briefings. The program is responsible for distribution of CFR publications and other relevant materials to Capitol Hill. The diplomatic and executive branch initiatives provide U.S. policymakers and foreign officials access to CFR publications, reports, and invitations to select on-the-record CFR meetings. External Affairs also produces regular eNewsletters tailored specifically for the executive branch, Congress, and diplomatic community.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist External Affairs in outreach efforts to Congress, the Executive Branch, and the diplomatic community
  • Help manage an extensive database
  • Distribute publications, both electronically and by hand delivery when necessary
  • Provide logistical support for External Affairs events by attending and staffing meetings
  • Research as needed

Qualifications

  • Must be available three days a week including Monday and Friday
  • Undergraduate or graduate student majoring in International Relations, Comparative Politics, World Politics, National Sercurity Studies, American Government, or Public Policy 
  • Congressional experience is required
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel, database management
  • Ability to multi-task and work well on a team
