  • Overview

    The Global Communications and Media Relations department is responsible for positioning and promoting CFR and Foreign Affairs via the full spectrum of media, marketing, and public relations. The Publishing department, part of the David Rockefeller Studies Program, is responsible for editing and producing CFR’s print and online publications. The Assistant Editor will help support both departments while ensuring CFR style consistency across the institution.

    The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

    • Editing the full range of CFR content, including publications, press releases, press notes, newsletters, brochures, media advisories, and other content
    • Writing press releases, press notes, newsletter content
    • Serving as communications lead for CFR books, projects, and products
    • Ensuring CFR style consistency across all products, including in print, the website, and promotional materials
    • Managing editorial review processes and serving as backup editor for CFR publications
    • Managing production and editing of quarterly members’ newsletter, the Chronicle
    • Developing outreach strategies and pitching senior scholars to editors and producers
    • Fielding journalists’ requests for experts
    • Assisting on ad hoc writing and editing projects, as needed
    • Providing editorial assistance and training to CFR staff as needed
    • Assisting with staffing needs for on-the-record events

    Qualifications

    • Degree with a concentration in international affairs or English with strong academic credentials  
    • Minimum of two years of editorial/writing experience in communications, journalism, publishing, or related field
    • Proven knowledge of current U.S. foreign policy and international affairs issues; interest in a career in communications, journalism, publishing, or international relations
    • Excellent editing skills, including copyediting, fact checking, and headline writing
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Flexible, positive, team-oriented attitude and ability to independently balance multiple projects; proven ability to meet deadlines
    • Availability to work a flexible schedule in order to respond to assignments due to breaking news
