  • Overview

    The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is seeking a Managing Director, Digital Development, to manage CFR’s ongoing transformation across all digital platforms. This encompasses multiple websites, interactive features, video, content management systems and movement toward personalization and customization. Reporting to the Chief Digital Officer, and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Technology Officer, they will supervise the Digital Technology team.

    The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

    • Act as chief tech strategist and software architect
    • Managing and mentoring a team of front and backend developers, dev opps and QA
    • Evaluating CFR’s code on all digital platforms
    • Providing strategic direction to CFR’s management team on digital technology priorities 
    • Ensuring best practices are being met for code deployments and QA practices
    • Implementing and evaluating technical success metrics
    • Continuous collaboration with the Director of Product and Design
    • Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Director on strategic budget forecasting and management and long term goal setting
    • Providing annual project planning and monthly objective planning with staff
    • Partnering with Chief Technology Officer on CFR’s digital security risk assessment and mitigation strategies
    • Mitigating the opportunity for site outages when implementing large rollouts through scheduling rollouts during off-peak hours
    • Collaborating with the Chief Digital Officer on strategy and prioritization
    • Evaluating and innovating workflows such as continuous delivery and containerization
    • Keeping abreast on industry trends and new technologies

    Qualifications

    • BS or MSc in Computer Science or relevant STEM fields
    • 10+ years of management experience in a development engineering and operations department
    • Significant experience as a software architect and engineer, including extensive Drupal experience
    • Expert knowledge and experience in Agile methodology and the ability to shift toward an Agile environment.
    • Extensive experience supervising complex teams and systems
    • Significant large-scale financial management experience and proven track record of rigorously managing estimates and forecasts
    • Experience in leading teams through project life cycles
    • Deep understanding and experience in managing digital risk assessment and risk mitigation
    • Strong belief and experience in working collaboratively with design and product teams
    • Proficiency in developing and implementing effective analytics strategy 
    • Fluency in Java Script, JQuery, CSS, and HTML
    • Expertise in analytical tools including Adobe Site Catalyst, Google analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, Optimizely, comScore, and Social Listening tools
    • Degree in computer science or a related field
