Overview

The Council’s David Rockefeller Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program’s aim is to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.

 

As part of the Studies Program, the research associate will support the work of multiple programs, including national security and defense and U.S. foreign policy. The research associate will provide half-time support to the Shelby Cullom and Kathryn W. Davis Senior Fellow for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security, in addition to short-term assignments as requested by the Studies program.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing logistical and administrative support to fellows, including scheduling and calendar management, making travel arrangements, handling correspondence, and responding to media and information request
  • Coordinating events, including preparing invitations, making travel arrangements, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support
  • Providing research for articles, book chapters, and other publications, as requested
  • Handling writing assignments, summarizing research findings, and composing business correspondence.
  • Tracking news and data sources
  • Assisting with the proofreading and editing of articles, book chapters, and other written materials
  • Assisting in managing budgets, including preparing budgets and tracking monthly statements, monitoring grant information and writing reports and requests, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement
  • Assisting fellow(s) with social media outreach, including publishing a blog, website, video, and/or using social media applications such as Twitter, Facebook, etc., as needed
  • Substituting for a staff member who is out of the office, and/or assisting a program that is working on a deadline or preparing for a large event
  • Supporting other fellows and departments, upon request

Qualifications

  • Degree in international relations, political science, a related social science, or history with high academic achievement
  • One or more year(s) related administrative and/or internship experience preferred; experience coordinating events strongly preferred
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing assignment and multitasking several projects at one time
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with high attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet research
