Overview

CFR Digital is seeking a Director of Design and User Experience to join our award-winning team. The candidate will manage a team of UX, data visualization and print designers. The role will oversee the design and UX for all projects, including interactives, maps, timelines, assets for video, print collateral, as well as overall page design for CFR.org and its mobile products. The Director will work closely and collaboratively with the editorial, product and engineering teams and support council-wide initiatives involving Studies and the Executive office. Council branding will also fall under the Director’s purview.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide leadership, design, and branding direction across the Council at large
  • Continue to evolve CFR.org’s design and user experience with industry standards and best practices
  • Oversee the implementation of all in- and out-of-house design projects for CFR.org
  • Serve as lead designer on occasional projects
  • Act as visual brand steward
  • Develop, nurture, and grow a multidisciplinary design team

Qualifications

  • Eight or more years of experience implementing and applying digital design principles or intuitive experiences across desktop and mobile products
  • Related experience supervising and managing a team with the ability to mentor and direct across diverse opportunities and challenges
  • Degree in digital design or a related field
  • Ability to align key executive stakeholders to produce desired outcomes
  • Experience working within an agile product development organization
  • Expertise in Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and other design software
  • Knowledge of user research, user personas, and usability testing
  • Proficiency in design systems and pattern libraries
  • Knowledge of design assets for video
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Self-starting, results oriented attitude and strong interpersonal, management, and teamwork skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills
  • Interest in U.S. foreign policy issues or experience in think tanks or nonprofits a plus
