Overview

The Art Director of Foreign Affairs magazine is responsible for overseeing all aspects of design and layout in Foreign Affairs and ForeignAffairs.com. Founded in 1922, Foreign Affairs is the preeminent publication on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy. It is published by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which is a leading independent, nonprofit membership organization and nonpartisan center dedicated to producing and disseminating foreign policy ideas.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Upholding visual consistency and appeal across Foreign Affairs’ content and products
  • Overseeing the layout and design of the print magazine, including art-directing the cover, commissioning illustrators, sourcing infographics and maps, selecting and editing photos, and managing the relationship with our printer
  • Overseeing the design and layout of Foreign Affairs’ website and other digital content, such as our newsletters, our podcast pages, and our social media promotion

Qualifications

  • At least four years’ experience in a design- or art-related field
  • An impressive portfolio showcasing good taste and beautiful design
  • An interest in elevating the visual design of a text-heavy publication and website
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, with a mastery of InDesign and Photoshop
  • A technical understanding of both print and digital design
  • Experience working with web designers and programmers, a familiarity with basic web-design tools, and an understanding of how visual design and art translates to various digital platforms
  • A bachelor’s degree in design or a related field
  • The ability to translate abstract concepts into graphic visualizations
  • Connections to a large pool of freelance illustrators and designers
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A collaborative and inspiring manner
  • Good written and oral communication skills
