The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is a leading nonprofit and nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to improving the understanding of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs through the free exchange of ideas. CFR’s Global Communications team works to promote CFR and Foreign Affairs content, activities, and experts via outreach to the media.
CFR’s Communications team is seeking to hire an associate or deputy director, depending on job experience. This role is responsible for leading media relations efforts to promote CFR publications, initiatives, and experts. The position will work closely with the managing director and communications coordinator in DC and with the communications team in NY. The position reports to the vice president of Global Communications. The position is hybrid (in office three days a week), based at CFR’s Washington DC office.
Develop and implement media strategies for CFR publications, initiatives, experts, and resources.
Write and edit news releases, press notes, media advisories, and other promotional materials for CFR.
Proactively pitch CFR experts and content to print, broadcast, and digital media and secure top-tier earned media coverage. Assist with op-ed placement.
Coordinate cross-departmental marketing strategy meetings to promote CFR publications and collaborate with external publishers to market CFR books.
Manage media invitations for and press attendance at on-the-record CFR events and publication rollouts in Washington DC; serve as the CFR Communications liaison with external speakers' institutional communications team around on-the-record events.
Organize press briefings and provide media relations support around breaking news and significant new events.
Track and report on media mentions for weekly and bi-annual reports.
Build new media relationships and expand CFR's press contacts.
Education
Experience
Minimum of 6 years of related experience in media relations, communications, media industry, or journalism.
Related Skills & Other Requirements
Excellent writing and editing skills and experience writing news releases and copy editing.
Proven knowledge of and demonstrated interest in current U.S. foreign policy and international affairs
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
Strong working knowledge of international issues and familiarity with media landscape
Candidates must be proactive, organized, and able to excel in a deadline-driven environment.
Candidates must have the ability and willingness to work flexible hours when necessary.

The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000 per year for associate director level, depending on experience.
The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $115,000 per year for deputy director level, depending on experience.
