Position Summary

Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) fellowships offer unique, transformational opportunities for U.S. citizens with a demonstrated commitment to a career in foreign policy to gain experience in a new environment. Selected fellows broaden their perspective on foreign affairs by work in a policymaking setting, at CFR exploring a policy relevant issue, or overseas working at a company, think tank, or university.

 

 The Fellowship Affairs department currently administers several visiting fellowship programs per year, including: The International Affairs Fellowship (IAF); Military Fellowship; Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship; Historian-in-Residence Fellowship; Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship; and the Technologist-in-Residence Fellowship.

 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Director of Studies, and Maurice R. Greenberg Chair, CFR is seeking a Director, Fellowship Affairs who will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Fellowship Affairs program. This role is responsible for aligning Fellowship Affairs goals with the priorities of the Studies Program, managing staff, developing and executing long-term strategy, and ensuring operational excellence. The Director will serve as the principal liaison between internal and external stakeholders to promote the visibility and impact of the fellowship program.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Oversee the strategic planning, design, and operations of the fellowship affairs program, including directing the annual administration of CFR’s fellowship programs (application cycles, selection processes, award distribution, etc.)
  • Evaluate and evolve programmatic operations and offerings, including selection processes, placement of visiting fellows, and alumni engagement
  • Develop and oversee programming for in-resident fellows, in coordination with others
  • Develop and manage budgets for the fellowship programs
  • Manage and support a team responsible for program coordination, marketing, application support, and placements, including for international programs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Fellowship Affairs program with internal and external stakeholders, further enhancing the visibility and reputation of CFR fellowships as premier institutional offerings
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Bachelor of Arts in international relations or a related field with high academic credentials; advanced degree preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, nonprofit or fellowship/grant administration.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $165,000 - $185,000 depending on experience.
