CFR’s Washington External Affairs operation is focused primarily on actively engaging members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and their staff to provide timely, relevant, and useful analyses to further inform policymaking at the U.S. Capitol. Through discussion and examination of the critical challenges facing the United States and international community, the program seeks to serve as both a direct resource for Congress and a convener of leading thinkers and practitioners both on and off the Hill in a variety of nonpartisan fora. The secondary focus on this program is facilitating engagement with the diplomatic community and executive branch.

The David Rockefeller Studies Program at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is seeking to hire a fellow or senior fellow for Women and Foreign Policy. The status of women and girls around the world has significant consequences for economic prosperity, political stability, human rights, democracy, and other vital U.S. foreign policy objectives. The selected candidate will be expected to conduct original research and writing on these major issues. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual looking to shape the national conversation on U.S. policy involving women around the world. The position will be assigned at either the fellow or senior fellow level, depending on the selected applicant’s credentials and accomplishments. This position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC.

The Program Assistant will work under the direction of the Vice President of Meetings and Membership. The Membership team coordinates the selection process of new members, and serves as the front-facing department for CFR’s 5,000 members in order to enhance their member experience.

CFR Outreach works to raise the profile of the organization and develop relationships with communities across the United States, including college and university educators, administrators, and students; congregational leaders, religion scholars, and representatives of faith-based organizations; state and local officials; and local journalists. This assistant director position will focus on cultivating relations with the academic community including professors, administrators, and students in higher educational institutions. Primary responsibilities will be connecting this constituency with CFR’s research and analysis and providing forums to discuss international relations and the role of the United States in the world.

CFR’s David Rockefeller Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks, with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program’s aim is to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.   The research associate will work under the direction of a senior fellow on projects related to India, Pakistan, and South Asia, with a special emphasis on India, and the United States’ and China’s interests in the region, particularly in their bilateral relationships with India. This role offers an opportunity to learn about the priority issues and approaches to them in U.S. and Chinese foreign policy toward India and South Asia, as well as rising and great power politics and power transitions.

CFR Digital is seeking a Director of Design and User Experience to join our award-winning team. The candidate will manage a team of UX, data visualization and print designers. The role will oversee the design and UX for all projects, including interactives, maps, timelines, assets for video, print collateral, as well as overall page design for CFR.org and its mobile products. The Director will work closely and collaboratively with the editorial, product and engineering teams and support council-wide initiatives involving Studies and the Executive office. Council branding will also fall under the Director’s purview.

The intern will assist the research associate and fellow with research, editing, and administrative tasks. The intern will gain firsthand experience with the tools scholars use to analyze U.S. foreign policy and its implications.   CFR internships are paid, require a 14 - 18 hour commitment, and are filled on a rolling basis.   Fall semester internship opportunities are on a fully remote/virtual basis.

The David Rockefeller Studies Program at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program aims to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions. Launched in January 2020, Think Global Health is a CFR-sponsored online magazine that examines the ways that health shapes economies, societies, and everyday lives around the world. Since its launch, the site has published 342 articles from 364 authors, representing fifty-six countries on six continents, and it has attracted more than two million pageviews. Major news outlets, such as the New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, BBC, Vox, New York Magazine, and many others have shared and linked Think Global Health articles, data visualizations, and interviews.   The Staff Editor, Think Global Health will support daily operations of a new CFR project on the future of U.S. engagement on global health. The Staff Editor will help coordinate and edit the work of contributors to a section of the Think Global Health website dedicated to this project. In the performance of this work, the Staff Editor will work under the direction of the senior fellow for global health responsible for the project and in coordination with the Director of the Global Health Program and the Deputy Managing Editor of Think Global Health.
