The Program Assistant, Task Forces, Washington External Affairs, and Executive Office is responsible for supporting the work of the Independent Task Force team, the Washington External Affairs team, and the Executive Office. The position works closely with staff in all three of these areas. This role will primarily be onsite in the Washington, DC office.

All who are selected to participate in CFR’s Blavatnik Internship Program and Robina Franklin Williams Internship Program receive training in the field of foreign policy and international affairs as well as skills training in writing, research, program planning, and much more.   The Intern, Executive Office will work under the direction of the Special Assistant to the President and Managing Director, Partnerships and Strategy. Qualified candidates will have related experience that requires judgment, discretion, strong writing and editing skills, the ability to prioritize, and experience dealing with high-profile individuals.   CFR internships are paid, require a 14 to 18-hour commitment, and are filled on a rolling basis.   Please note that this internship will only be offered in-person. All internships are paid positions (no exceptions can be made on this). As such, all interns must have the legal right to work in the United States to be eligible for consideration.

The Council on Foreign Relations creates innovative educational resources to equip students and the interested public with the skills, knowledge, and perspective—the global literacy—required to understand the forces, ideas, and institutions that shape our world. These resources include World101, a growing library of multimedia primers explaining the fundamentals of international relations and U.S. foreign policy; Model Diplomacy, a multimedia simulation program that invites participants to role-play in the context of National Security Council and UN Security Council meetings; and Convene the Council, an educational video game created in collaboration with iCivics. CFR Education content comes with an array of teaching resources and activities aimed at middle school, high school, and higher ed instructors and their students.    Working under the supervision of senior management in the Education Department, the Senior Writer will collaborate with CFR experts and a small editorial team, led by a Content Director, to develop new and update existing multimedia lessons and mini simulations that populate CFR Education’s vast content library. This position is based in CFR’s New York office on a hybrid basis. CFR currently defines hybrid status as working at least three days a week onsite, with Tuesdays and Thursdays considered institutional anchor days where all staff are required to be onsite.

The Director, Council Trips is responsible for developing, planning, and delivering high-end, foreign policy-focused domestic and international travel experiences for CFR’s membership and staff. The Director oversees trip planning from start to finish and is responsible for developing trip concepts with appropriate in-house experts, determining the destinations, and proposing topics for meetings and briefings.   This position is part of CFR’s Executive Office and reports to the Chief of Staff to the President, working closely with various departments within CFR on specific projects. This position can be based in either CFR’s New York or Washington, DC office on a hybrid basis. Working under the supervision of CFR’s Managing Director for Development, the Associate Director for Stewardship is responsible for the stewardship of CFR’s Major Donors through special events and activities. This position is a critical part of CFR’s fundraising team and works closely with colleagues across CFR, Trustees, and major donors to develop and implement a comprehensive stewardship program. The role offers the opportunity to apply creative and critical thinking skills in a wide range of communications and special events.

CFR’s David Rockefeller Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program aims to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions. As part of the Studies Program, the research associate will support the work of the fellow for trade policy on the areas of trade, international economics, and foreign policy. The research associate will also support the work of other programs within the Studies Program.

The Global Communications and Media Relations office works to promote the Council on Foreign Relations’ programs, publications, and scholars. It uses the full complement of channels and platforms to reach target audiences, including traditional and social media outreach, webcasts, podcasts, conference calls, and press briefings. The Assistant Director is responsible for positioning and promoting CFR, with a primary focus on the media relations efforts for Foreign Affairs magazine and its website, ForeignAffairs.com. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Global Communications and Media Relations.

The David Rockefeller Studies Program at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is seeking to hire a fellow or senior fellow for technology, with the title depending on the successful candidate’s level of experience. The fellow will be expected to conduct original research on the challenges and opportunities that new technologies create for U.S. national security, economic policy, intelligence policy, and/or foreign policy, and to identify specific steps that policymakers should take in response. This is an extraordinary opportunity for someone looking to shape the national conversation on the intersection of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, or synthetic biology with America’s role in the world.

The headquarters of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is housed in the historic landmark Harold Pratt Mansion and state-of-the-art Peterson Conference Center. This combined space is used for several hundred meetings a year. The Associate Director, Building Maintenance Operations and Engineering will report to the Deputy Director, Building Operations and Engineering. The position will be responsible for managing daily maintenance and repair of all building systems and equipment, as well as for managing the maintenance of the facilities overall appearance. This will include hands on maintenance and repair work on HVAC, boiler, heating, refrigeration, water, and energy systems, etc., managing vendor relations and preparing RFP’s and bid analysis and recommendations.

The goal of the National Program and Outreach department is to connect CFR’s research and analysis with constituents of four communities in the United States: college and university educators and students; religious leaders; state and local officials; and local journalists—and to energize foreign policy discussions with CFR members based outside of New York and Washington, DC, areas. Under the supervision of the vice president and director of the National Program and Outreach department and a program coordinator, the program assistant will support CFR Outreach efforts.
